THE Narre Warren Community Craft shop is closing its doors after 21 years.
Volunteer Phyllis Booth told the News the centre would be relocating to the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick.
The decision to move came because of reduced interest in local craft in the area, according to Ms Booth.
“Times have changed and young mums don’t seem to be interested in craft any more,” she said.
“It’s both a sad and exciting time for the craft shop.”
The new shop will continue to showcase local crafts and specialised gifts, with the added bonus of a cafe providing light lunch and afternoon tea.
More than 15 volunteers will help move the craft shop to its new home in early February or March next year.
Ms Booth said feedback from the community had been positive.
“It’s time for a change and a fresh start at the popular Berwick landmark,” she said.
Ms Booth, who was one of the originators of the Narre Warren Community Craft shop with Julie Sorrell, said she hoped the new shop would attract a variety of different customers.
“Young mums use the ground at the Old Cheese Factory for playgroups and many buses visit on local tours,” she said.
The Narre Warren Community Craft shop first opened in the late 80s when craft was a popular activity at the Narre Community Learning Centre.
