A SENSATIONAL nine-wicket haul, including a hat-trick, by Berwick’s Will Carr was the highlight of round five of the Dandenong and District Cricket Association’s turf-one on Saturday.
Carr took a stunning four wickets for 19 runs in the first innings against Coomoora and followed this up with five wickets for 21 runs, including his hat-trick, in the follow-on.
Berwick was the most impressive side on Saturday, finding form and despatching Coomoora with an outright victory.
There were no other surprises in the round with all four top sides recording wins.
TURF ONE
@BT Sub Sport News:Berwick v Coomoora
Having posted 7/251 on day one of the clash, Berwick was in a good position to go on the attack against Coomoora with the ball and it did just that.
Played at Berwick’s Arch Brown Reserve, the home side took just 36.4 overs to dismiss Coomoora in the first innings, skittling the side for 91 runs and handing Berwick first-innings points.
Will Carr was the destroyer, picking up his 4/19 off 9.4 overs, while Englishman Alec Roberts chimed in with 3/35 off 11.
Forced to follow on, Coomoora was even more dismal in its second stint at the crease, lasting just 19.1 overs for 71 runs.
Again, Carr did the damage with his 5/21 off six overs, including the hat-trick.
@BT Sub Sport News:Hallam-Kalora Park v Springvale South
Springvale South successfully defended its day-one score of 249 against Hallam-Kalora Park on Saturday.
Charged with bowling to the league’s highest scoring team, Springvale South’s bowlers took control of the game, wiping out the batsmen for 167 off 58.2 overs.
Nick Bole-Brown picked up 4/59 off 21 overs, while Glen Scales claimed season-best figures of 3/34 off 10.2.
@BT Sub Sport News:Narre Warren v Cranbourne
Narre Warren’s tail saved the side from a humiliating defeat at the hands of Cranbourne at Sweeny Reserve, after a top-order collapse on day one.
Resuming the day on 6/67, chasing Cranbourne’s 87, the home side’s lower order withstood the visitors’ bowling attack to take the first-innings points.
David Wheeler (21) and Chris Jarrett (28 not-out) did enough to guide the team past the required total, before Dwayne Scott (14 not-out) helped push the total on, with Narre eventually declaring at 8/138.
Having lost the first innings, Cranbourne set its sights on an outright victory and it plundered a quick-fire 4/219 in its second knock.
Jason Hameeteman made up for his first-innings failure with a solid 102, combining with fellow opener Scott Murdoch (83) for a 151-run opening stand.
The declaration left Narre Warren with 25 overs to survive and it did so, dropping five wickets along the way.
@BT Sub Sport News:Doveton v St Mary’s
Doveton’s impressive day-one score of 8/306 stood the test against St Mary’s, with the Doves recording a solid victory.
St Mary’s had a less than ideal start to the match when Jesse McCartney lost his wicket without score and when first drop Daniel Davis went for 14, the side languished at 2/25.
But captain and opener Troy Cashman was a rock at the top of the innings, compiling 73 as he churned through a series of partners.
Aside from Luke Byron (31), no one offered much support and when Cashman was finally run out, the side lost 6/47 in quick succession, collapsing all out for 178.
Brad Downe (3/23 off 10) and Corrie Wilson (3/35 off 14) did the damage with the ball for the Doves.
TURF TWO
@BT Sub Sport News:Fountain Gate v Berwick
Fountain Gate was one of the few clubs on Saturday that successfully chased down an opposition total, with the side overhauling Berwick’s day-one score of 204 at Max Pawsey Reserve.
The batsmen got off to a shaky start with Cory Wilson (three) losing his wicket cheaply, but Stephen White (31) and John Mirranay (23) got the innings going.
The pair was unable to continue on from their starts and when the side fell to 4/76, Berwick was clearly on top of the clash.
It took the middle-order pairing of Jarryd Murrian (50) and captain Bruce Mullen (65) to steer the innings back on course and the duo put on 112 runs before Murrian fell.
Mullen stayed on and survived until Fountain Gate reached Berwick’s total, seeing off a number of partners on the way.
The win sees Fountain Gate remain in the top four, while Berwick slumps to ninth on the ladder.
@BT Sub Sport News:HSD v Southern Pirates
HSD continued its domination of the Turf Two competition, claiming its third outright victory in five games, this time over third-placed Southern Pirates.
The Pirates have been one of the premier batting sides this season, but HSD made them look like juniors in their clash, dismissing them for 69 in the first innings then 63 in the second.
The Pirates resumed the play at 2/13 in the second innings after conceding first-innings points on day one, but found little joy as Paul Stockdale annihilated their batting ranks.
Stockdale picked up his best figures for the season – and his fourth five-wicket haul – with figures of 6/27 off 14.1 overs.
Stockdale re-enforced why he is considered one of the top bowlers in Turf Two, with his average at an astonishing 8.4 after five games this season.
@BT Sub Sport News:Hampton Park v Lyndale
Lyndale capitalised on Hampton Park’s loss of wickets late on day one, bowling the side out 10 runs short of the required total in a tense match at Hampton Park’s Booth Reserve.
Lyndale posted 154 on day one, but performed better with the ball, ensuring the home side resumed play at 4/24.
Hampton Park looked to be on track to overhaul Lyndale’s total early on day two, with Stephen Boltong (14) and Jonathan Rudge (29) kick-starting the innings.
When Boltong fell, Lionel Benoit (44) came to the crease at number-seven and helped push the score along.
But Rudge fell soon after, triggering a small collapse and Lyndale picked up two ducks, leaving the home side at 8/84.
A last-ditch partnership between Benoit and Daniel Redfern (30) kept Hampton Park in the hunt, but Lyndale’s Michael Gallagher struck, removing Redfern for his fourth wicket of the innings, ending the home side’s chase at 144.
@BT Sub Sport News:Mordialloc v Maranatha Methodist
Maranatha Methodist became the latest side to fall to Mordialloc’s three-pronged Campbell attack on Saturday.
Bowling trio Travis, Ben and Michael Campbell shared eight wickets between them as Maranatha failed to chase down Mordialloc’s day-one score of 9/257.
The side slumped to be all out for 142, but the total could have been a lot worse if not for captain Brett Ernst, who defied the bowlers to post 75 before falling lbw to Travis Campbell.
It was a disappointing performance for Maranatha, the second-highest scoring side in Turf Two and the result sees the team drop to seventh position on the ladder, three points behind Mordialloc in sixth.
