A NARRE Warren North man has lost his car after being clocked as Victoria’s oldest hoon.
The 78-year-old speeding senior shocked police after he was caught driving 170km/h in a 100km/h zone in Gippsland on New Years Day while on a Nissan-Datsun Sports Owners Club social run.
The lead foot was driving a hotted up red Nissan Pulsar sports car along Brandy Creek Road in Warragul at 1.45pm when he was caught by Baw Baw police.
Police said the man’s car and a Nissan Skyline driven by a 36-year-old Canterbury man were immediately impounded under the state’s anti-hoon laws.
Senior Sergeant John Brookes, who was duty sergeant on the day of the incident, told the News the elderly driver claimed to race cars, telling police he was “a confident and skilled driver.”
“He did admit to police that his driving manner was a silly thing to do,” he said.
“The speed was by far the fastest speed we’ve seen on a rural road.”
Sen Sgt Brookes said the incident was disappointing to police as it came 12 months after a motorcyclist was killed on the same road last New Years Day.
Both men paid $600 to retrieve their vehicles from the Warragul impoundment on Monday.
They will appear in court where they face being fined and losing their licences.
Baw Baw acting Sergeant Carlo Visser said the road that the man was hooning on was narrow and winding.
