SUN lovers are being urged to slip, slop and slap on some specs to save their sight this summer.
Optometrist Silvia Goldenberg from Specsavers Optometrists Fountain Gate, is calling on the community to include sunglasses in their summer-sun ritual. “Sunglasses are a vital defence against the potentially irreversible eye damage,” she said.
Most Australians understand the link between ultraviolet (UV) radiation and skin cancer, although many are less aware of the connection between UV radiation and eye damage, according to Ms Goldenberg. “Without proper eye protection in strong sunlight, people could actually sunburn their cornea,” she said.
“The condition is called photokeratitis and can be extremely painful for one to two days and may result in temporary loss of vision.”
Ms Goldenberg is urging Casey residents to take the right precautions and wear sunglasses that meet Australian standards. “Sunglasses and a hat, worn together, is the best combination to reduce UV radiation exposure to the eyes,” she said.
