NEW boating legislation aimed at increasing the safety of boaters, water craft operators and swimmers at coastal regions on is currently in the works.
Water Police Senior Sergeant Tim Tully said the current legislation is currently under review by Marine Safety Victoria and other stake holders including the Victorian Water Police.
“I am not exactly sure what will be proposed, but if there is a dramatic change I am sure there will be a period of transition with increased education,” Snr Sgt Tully said.
“There may be a significant change in how people obtain a boating licence. Instead of sitting an exam there may be a practical element to it.”
The new legislation is expected to commence in May 2010.
