IF FIRST impressions count then Melbourne Football Club can expect some extra memberships in Narre Warren South this season.
Melbourne footballers Jared Rivers and Austin Wonaeamirri visited Strathaird Primary School last week as part of the AFL club’s community camp in Casey.
The pair spoke to the students, ranging from Grades 3 to 6, about the bushfires, handed out prizes and tested the students’ football knowledge.
Strathaird Primary School physical education coordinator Lauren Kavanagh said Rivers and Wonaeamirri were a smash hit with the students.
“The kids loved it – even the non-Melbourne supporters,” she said.
“They were really good with the kids. Some players don’t have that rapport with the children, but they were really good and had them all laughing.
“Hopefully, we’ll get them out again soon.”
Some Richmond players are set to appear at the school next month, but Ms Kavanagh said the Demons have already earned many of the students’ affections.
“It was a great afternoon and was something different from what we normally do,” she said.
“I’m sure (there are a few new Melbourne supporters), especially the ones who don’t have a footy team yet.
“Richmond has a clinic coming up in March, so I think Melbourne has got in early!”
Melbourne has been training three times a week at Casey Fields over summer and played an intra-club match at the Cranbourne East venue on Saturday.
