The show must go on

FIREWORKS are off at this weekend’s Berwick agricultural show.
But show committee members in a meeting with the Country Fire Authority on Monday gave the green light to all other events.
The 161-year-old show is longer this year, events extending over three days rather than two, to ease traffic congestion in and around Berwick village and Beaconsfield. Some horse events will occur on Friday.
The main attractions are on Saturday and Sunday.
The decision to proceed with the show followed “careful consideration”, president Gordon Cumming said.
“The weather forecast for Friday is a major concern, but the situation looks favourable for the weekend.”
In Monday’s urgent talks with the CFA to check safety at the height of the worst bushfire season on record, the show committee decided it would be “prudent and responsible” to scrap the fireworks, despite their being a major attraction, Mr Cumming said.
Other major attractions include freestyle motocross, carnival rides, show bags, an animal nursery, skydiving, bands, Berwick Show Idol, Beaut Utes, a gumboot throwing competition on Saturday afternoon, and a new food and wine tasting section.
An amended Saturday program places novelty horse events at 4.45pm, the six-bar jump at 6.15 pm, sky diving at 7.30pm, and Empire FMX motor bikes at 8pm.
Free admission applies to children under 10. Admission for adults is $15, or $10 for concession card holders and for children 10 to 15. A family pass for two adults and two children costs $30.
