BACK flips with no hands and double-handed heart attacks were some of the freestyle motocross moves showcased by the Empire FMX riders at the Berwick Show.
The freestyle riders specialise in FMX – a gravity-defying sport requiring dedication and intense physical effort – and wowed audiences with five shows over the weekend.
Rider Daniel Tunnecliffe said the team had fun performing in front of the crowds at this year’s show.
“The cheering from the crowds help us get through the tricks and encourage us to do better,” he said.
The 24-year-old, who is apart of the Melbourne-based FMX team made up of professional athletes that have a passion for dirt bikes and big jumps, has been riding for 10 years.
“I started off by watching Crusty Demons videos and then I was hooked,” he said.
Mr Tunnecliffe has broken both his ankles and a wrist performing the gravity-defying stunts.
“I would encourage all riders to get as much experience on a bike and the track before attempting any freestyle moves,” he said.
Three-year-old Tye Eyers-Short from Frankston, who watched the show in amazement on Sunday, said the tricks were crazy.
“I want to be like those riders one day,” he said.
