Ambulance Victoria is calling for expressions of interest for medical advisors in primary care and psychiatry in an attempt to expand and diversify the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC).

Ambulance Victoria (AV) aims to improve the health of the community by providing high quality pre-hospital care.

AV provide emergency medical services for 6.5 million Victorians over an area of more than 227,000 square kilometres. There is also a secondary triage system that provides telehealth advice and expertly triages patients to the right pathway of care for their needs.

To ensure that guidelines and practices are robust and evidence-based, AV want to add both a general practitioner and a psychiatrist to our MAC.

The MAC is a high-level multidisciplinary committee of AV with executive leadership. The MAC’s role is to advise AV on clinical matters and review and approve the Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) used by 5,000 paramedics and first responders.

The positions are honorary, and the main responsibility would be to attend MAC meetings which are held quarterly to review and endorse AV’s CPGs. Medical advisors will also be called occasionally to advise on matters relating to their expertise, (for example, managing frequent presenting patients or on coronial matters).

If you are a consultant psychiatrist experienced in acute psychiatry, with an interest in the prehospital management of mental health emergencies and an understanding the Victorian mental health system, AV encourages you to apply.

If you are a general practitioner or rural and remote medicine specialist with experience or an interest in the prehospital management of primary care problems, we want to hear from you.

To apply, submit your expression of interest, including a cover letter outlining your suitability, CV and two referees, to Acting Medical Director, Dr David Anderson via clinicalguidelines@ambulance.vic.gov.au before Sunday 28 February.
