Cougars make splash at home

CARDINIA United Cougars Junior Soccer Club kicked off its first ever matches in Football Federation Victoria competition at the club’s new home at Pakenham’s Lakeside Reserve on Sunday.
A howling gale swept across the ground as the club’s under-10s took on their ‘Joeys’ counterparts from Bayside Knights and the Cougars ‘Kangaroos’ faced the Bentleigh Greens.
They were both seven-a-side teams and scores were not recorded as part of the National Development Plan for Soccer, where the emphasis is on fun, letting the game be the teacher, and everyone taking part in their own age group.
Both games were played in excellent spirit and the Cardinia United youngsters showed why they will be a force to reckon with in the seasons ahead.
Cougars president Rob Hastings was thrilled to see the club play competitive games for the first time.
“The sense of anticipation and excitement before the kick off could be felt amongst both players and parents,” he said.
“The ground looked superb and everyone was just thrilled to be part of something that will become very big around these parts”
Cardinia United’s under-13 side lost to formidable opponents from Sandringham City in the full fury of the elements in their opening encounter at 11-a-side competition.
The team showed a lot of courage to grab a late goal that will boost its confidence as it tackles established teams with considerably more experience.
Tuesday was an event of huge significance for the club as the floodlights at Lakeside Reserve were turned on for the first time.
The players took part in a lively and enthusiastic training session.
