LEAKING gas fumes killed a Berwick man yesterday morning as he worked to repair an underground gas tank at a Ballarat service station.
A woman passer-by and a doctor tried to resuscitate the man, 34, on a nearby footpath but he died at the scene.
A customer reported that gas was coming from the pit, which contained a 16,000 litre tank with 9000 litres of LPG.
Authorities evacuated surrounding houses while CFA firefighters tried to stop the leak.
A police and WorkSafe investigation is under way.
The man’s identity was unavailable at the time the News went to print.
