THE Salvation Army is urging Casey residents to dig deep and donate to the 2009 Red Shield Appeal.
Captain Craig Exon from the Berwick Salvos Church told the News that many volunteers would be out in force for the national doorknock on 23 and 24 May collecting money for the biggest fundraising effort nationwide for the Salvation Army.
The Rotary Club of Berwick has jumped on board with this year’s Red Shield Appeal, with many local schools also getting involved.
Last year in Casey around $40,000 was raised, with Mr Exon aiming to reach the same amount again this year.
“Despite the tough economic times we’re finding people still want to give,” he said.
In a typical week, the Salvation Army provides more than 100,000 meals and refuge to 500 victims of abuse. Mr Exon said there was a surprising amount of domestic violence taking place in the City of Casey.
“There’s also hidden homelessness in Casey, with people being forced to sleep on other people’s couches and in cars,” he said.
The collection point at the main intersection of High Street and Clyde Road in Berwick is one of the biggest money earners for the appeal, according to Mr Exon.
“People are generous and empty out the change from their ashtrays,” he said.
The Berwick Salvos Church has also started a second hand clothing shop in the church foyer on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, with garments costing $1 and $2. To donate to the Salvos call the Berwick Salvos Church on 9704 1940 or visit www.salvationarmy.org.au
