VOLUNTEERS braved the cold conditions in Casey last weekend to raise more than $9500 for the Big Brothers Big Sisters charity.
More than 32 volunteers took part in the intersection collection at six intersections across the south-east in an effort to collect money for the mentoring program.
Big Brothers Big Sisters provides support for vulnerable and disadvantaged children who are lacking a positive adult role model in their lives.
So far, according to Team leader Rebecca Wolstenholme, more than 70 young people aged seven to 17 years have been matched with volunteer mentors.
She said the response from the community in relation to the fundraiser was overwhelming.
“The commuters were generously raiding ashtrays and rummaging through pockets and purses to find all they could give to benefit a child in the community,” she said.
Across the intersection collection points $9599.20 was raised.
“This money will go directly to helping us match more young people in the outer south-east who deserve that friendship that many of us take for granted,” Ms Wolstenholme said.
