BERWICK City picked up its second State League Three South East win on Saturday with a 2-0 victory against Peninsula Strikers at Jack Thomas Reserve.
It was City’s first win at home this season, and the three points pushed the club up to fifth on the ladder.
The score sheet looked remarkably similar to the previous week’s, with young gun Justin Fernand and Orlando Mejias scoring one each in the win.
Berwick coach Joe Carrol said his side was the better team for most of the day.
“I wouldn’t say we did it comfortably but we created enough chances to win it by a bigger margin,” he said.
“The pleasing aspect of the whole game was they only really created one clear-cut chance. We were quite tight at the back and quite efficient.
“If we keep on creating the chances we’re creating, we’ll win the majority of games.”
Elsewhere, Casey Comets had a horror day on the park in State League Two South East, receiving an 8-0 thumping at the hands of Malvern City.
Down 2-0 at half-time the Comets faded badly in the second half, and were helpless as Malvern went on a rampage.
The victors had six individual goal-scorers, including Juan Sastre-Tejedor and Thomas Williams who scored two each.
Comets coach Tony Saunders said he was “gutted” after the match.
“We were just too young and inexperienced,” he said. “There’s nothing else to say to be honest.
“It was a bit of a shambles in the end. It was basically five or six players from the reserves. I don’t want to talk about it too much, I don’t want to make excuses either.”
Casey remains on the bottom of the ladder after the loss with two points from its five games so far, another two points behind 11th-placed South Springvale.
In Provisional League One South East action, Doveton also had a spectacular loss, going down 5-1 to Monash University at Waratah Reserve.
The half-time 2-1 scoreline in favour of Monash blew out in the second half, resigning the Doves to 10th place on the ladder.
Endeavour United is one place lower, however, after dropping its game against Fitzroy City 1-0.
Both sides have just one win to their names so far this season, but Doveton has picked up two points through draws.
This week, Casey takes on the in-form Diamond Valley United at Comets Stadium, Berwick City hits the road to take on Nunawading City, Doveton takes on Old Camberwell Grammar at Deepdene Park and Endeavour stays at home to Ashburton.
