WINDMILL Theatre Company has won musical production of the year for Cats.
The Berwick based non-professional theatre company also won best sound in a musical, best set in a musical and best musical director at the annual Lyrebird awards.
The Lyrebird awards are set up to foster the spirit of entertainment by theatre companies, according to Geoff Shields from the Windmill Theatre Company.
“Everyone involved with producing Cats was ecstatic to take home the gold award,” he said. “We don’t do theatre to win awards but when the recognition comes it’s a great pat on the back.”
Mr Shields said more than 30 dancers took centre stage for the musical, with many volunteers helping out behind the scenes. “It was a great team effort,” he said.
Windmill Theatre Company performs two musicals a year, with the next production being Les Miserables at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong from 13 to 28 June.
