Classy Cannons in top four

A DASHING 3-0 victory over Monash University has vaulted Casey Hockey Club’s women’s Metro One South side into the top four.
The Cannons were clearly too classy for their Uni counterparts and should have scored five, if not six, goals from their relentless attacks.
But strong work from the Uni goalkeeper meant Casey had to settle with three goals, courtesy of Lee Greenwood, Alison O’Halloran and Liz Nicholl.
Twos coach Marinette Dames praised the efforts of left-inner Sue Barling and youngsters Laura Morris and Carlie Stewart.
“Sue just broke down their right side. They probably didn’t get into our half more than seven times through the whole game,” she said.
“Laura Morris and Carlie Stewart played very well, they were very disciplined, we were well-structured and it was really impressive to watch.”
Dames put the team’s good performance down to ‘disciplined training practices’.
“We train as a team together and the commitment from everyone at training is paying off in the games,” she said.
The men’s Metro Three South side pulled off its fourth win on the trot, downing the Old Haileyburians’ Association Hockey Club 6-1.
Two goals each from the productive Craig Moore and Blaine Cridge were backed up by opportunistic nets from coach Rodney Tredoux and Steven Randall.
A defensive mistake in the final minute cost the Cannons a clean sheet, but the win should see them break into the top four.
The women’s thirds went down 2-0 at Mentone.
