Plate thieves

MORE than 80 motorists made the most of a free police service in Cranbourne this week.
People were able to bring their cars to the Bunnings Warehouse car park at the Cranbourne Homemaker Centre on Monday and get their number plate screws replaced for free. Police replaced the screws with ones that were harder to remove in an effort to prevent number plate theft.
Greta Radnetter from the Cranbourne Police Senior Citizen’s Register said 84 people had their screws changed.
Sergeant Ian Lane, Senior Constable Fiona Jeffrey, Constable Alison McIntosh and senior citizens volunteer Ivan Swain helped on the day.
“It was busy and at one point I think, we had 15 cars lined up,” Ms Radnetter said.
She said people came from Berwick and Narre Warren to use the free service.
A surprising number of people who came down had their plates stolen or knew someone who had.
