CASEY’S men’s State League Three side bounced back from a 10-0 walloping at the hands of top-of-the-table Geelong to record a draw with Old Xaverians last Saturday.
The third-placed Old Xaverians could be forgiven for taking it easy after the previous round’s result, but didn’t count on the Cannons’ fiercedesire to bounce back.
Led by the return of Matthew Light from a stint at Toorak-East Malvern and the fleet-footed Nick Wood, Casey played with passion and aggression throughout.
The tightly fought contest saw neither side give an inch and a fitting score of 1-1 was the end result, with Light scoring the Cannons’ sole goal.
Coach Lawrie Edwards was pleased with his young charges’ resolve.
“(The loss against Geelong) could have been the end of our season, but our boys don’t know how to quit,” he said.
“They just fought, played hard and would not be denied.
“Hopefully this is a springboard for us to record some stronger results in the second half of the season.”
The ones sit in last place on six points, with one win and three draws after nine rounds, but are only a point behind three sides – St Bede’s, Baw Baw and Frankston.
The twos also took on Old Xaverians in Metro One East, but did not fare as well as their State League counterparts, going down 1-0.
The thirds continued their merry romp, again starting slow, but fighting back from 2-0 down to win 5-2.
Blaine Cridge scored a double, while club legend Jeff Reidy and Craig Moore also managed goals.
Young winger Josh Phillips capped off his best game for the thirds with an opportunistic goal.
In the women’s division, the State League Three side would be bitterly disappointed not to take full points in its 0-0 draw against bottom-placed Knox.
Sitting fifth, these are the games the ones have to put away if they are to play finals.
Metro One South went down3-2 to Doncaster and Metro ThreeSouth dropped its game against Knox 3-1.
The fourths did well to record a 2-0 victory – their third of the season – over Mornington Green.
