CASEY’S mid-season resurgence continued on Saturday with a 1-0 win against the Eastern Lions at Comets Stadium.
The Comets racked up their third win of the State League Two South East season, propelling them into 10th place on the ladder and clear of the relegation zone.
The home side came out firing and was on top of the clash for most of the first half, with Kris Paterson eventually breaking through the Lions’ defence to score the only goal of the game.
After half-time the Lions changed their structure and ran with three strikers in an attempt to score an equaliser, but Casey’s defence proved rock-solid, barely allowing the Lions a crack at ’keeper Cristian Morales’ goal.
Comets coach Tony Saunders put the result down to his side’s outstanding defence.
“Overall, defensively we were great, whatever they threw at us we were able to deal with,” he said.
“The guys at the back, Wayne Schembri, Leigh Wilkinson, Daniel Mota and the goalkeeper, Cristian Morales, were all organised defensively and did very, very well.”
The win was even more impressive as the Comets were missing captain Ben Watson, who was out due to suspension.
This week the Comets face an away game against Dandenong City and Saunders said a win there would be a huge boost to the club.
“We’ve gone up a couple of spots which is nice, we’re sort of pulling ourselves away a bit and hopefully dragging the others into the mix a bit, if we have a good win on Saturday hopefully we can overtake another one or two teams.”
Berwick City went one step closer to a promotion spot in State League Three South East with a 3-1 win against Southern Suburbs in their top-of-the-table clash.
City moved into top spot in the division, a point ahead of Southern Suburbs, after Stuart Mackie scored a double and Jusuf Pekmezovic a single at Jack Thomas Reserve.
In Provision League One South East action, Endeavour United went down 3-2 to Warragul United and Doveton lost 2-1 to Mooroolbark and both sides are sitting dangerously low on the ladder with eight rounds remaining.
