THREE talented students from Fountain Gate Secondary College were selected as finalists for the Australian Academy of Design’s Photographic Competition.
Year 10 Advanced Photography students Olivia Howman, Jasmyn McSweeney and Samantha Tognazzini had their photographs displayed at the Academy’s Clement Meadmore gallery in Port Melbourne.
Fountain Gate Art and Photography teacher Sherrie Seeney attended the opening of the show on June 10 with finalist Olivia Howman. Ms Seeney said the opening was a huge success with media, educators, students and local artists in attendance.
“The students were really excited to be chosen as finalists and have their work shown in a real gallery,” Ms Seeney said.
“We’re very proud of the students for getting so far, and try to get them to enter as many competitions as possible.”
Although not winning the competition, Samantha Tongnazzini came close, receiving a Highly Recommended from the judges, meaning she was seriously considered as a winner. The competition aims to encourage young photographers and entries were received from students all over Victoria.
Ms Sweeney says that all three finalists are considering pursuing an area of the arts after high school and competitions like these are great opportunities for students to expand their interest in the arts.
