Variety night for cancer cause

A BERWICK woman is gearing up to host a variety night as part of the Cancer Council’s Girls Night In fundraising events.
Jade Giles is calling on Casey women to support the event on Saturday 28 November, which includes live performances, silent auction items, a photo booth, local artists, food and drink and a lifestyle expo.
The 20-year-old told the News she was expecting around 200 women on the night.
“I could see there was a need for an event like this in the area,” Ms Giles said.
“It will help connect women and build relationships and provide a support for women who have or are suffering from breast cancer.”
The event will run from 7pm to 9.30pm at the City Edge Centre in Fountain Gate, located at 426 Princes Highway.
Tickets cost $20 for adults, $15 for students and $10 for children under the age of 12.
More than 109 Casey residents will join Ms Giles to hold a Girls Night In, according to the Cancer Council.
Women are encouraged to invite their friends around for a fun night this month and donate what they would have spent on a night out towards the Cancer Council’s work into breast and gynaecological cancers.
This year marks five years of the fundraising initiative, which has raised more than $12 million across Australia.
Last year, $1 million was raised in Victoria, with more than $29,000 of that being raised in the City of Casey.
Cancer Council Victoria spokeswoman Barbara Fernandez said the five-year milestone provided a chance to thank local fundraising supporters for their contribution.
“Girls Night In is Cancer Council’s fastest growing fundraising event, and we’ve had a fantastic response from local women,” Ms Fernandez said.
“Due to the campaigns such as Girls Night In effort, there has been an increase in the relative survival rates for breast cancer in recent years – five years after diagnosis, it’s now at 87 per cent in Victoria. We hope this same kind of increase in survival rates can be achieved for all women’s cancers, but we need the community’s continued support,” she said.
