Police said the 23-year-old and his girlfriend were in a taxi travelling through the restaurant car park in Endeavour Hills on Monday 5 October about 4am when a group of three men and a woman began verbally abusing them.
According to police, the man confronted the group and one of the men then struck him with a baseball bat to the forehead.
The group fled on foot towards a nearby undercover car park.
The victim received five stitches to the head wound at hospital.
The offender is described as being Caucasian, aged in his late teens to early 20s with short dark hair.
