Turn on a cheaper shower

CASEY residents will get the chance to score a free water-efficient showerhead after news that an additional 50,000 will be available to Victorian households by the end of 2010.
The news comes as part of an extension of the showerhead exchange program.
Water Minister Tim Holding said the additional showerheads were a major boost to the program that had already seen 350,000 free showerheads provided to the state’s households, saving more than four billion litres of water every year.
The showerhead exchange is part of the Brumby Government’s water plan that also includes building Australia’s largest desalination plant and capturing water savings from irrigation upgrades.
Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said households could save up to $60 a year on water and energy bills by using a water-efficient showerhead.
“Older style showerheads can use between 14 and 20 litres of water per minute, compared to a three-star showerhead that uses only nine litres per minute. Showers should be kept to four minutes,” he said.
Casey residents can take part in the showerhead exchange by heading to the Civic Centre in Magid Drive in Narre Warren or visiting South East Water’s Water Conservation Information Kiosk at Westfield Fountain Gate. For details phone South East Water on 131 694.
