The fruity way

By Kelly Yates
Nutrition Australia visited the school to promote the benefits of fruit and teach students how to eat kiwifruit with a ‘spife’.
Hallam Primary School wellbeing officer Shirley Fletcher said she had already noticed the students getting very excited about fruit.
Linden Clarke from Nutrition Australia said results from previous years had shown a dramatic rise in the amount of fruit and vegetables in lunchboxes as a result of the program.
“One school reported a rise in fruit and vegetables from 65 to 95 per cent within a few months of the program starting,” she said.
“A diet high in fruits and vegetables helps protect our children against heart disease, lowers their risk of diabetes and helps them maintain a healthy weight.”
According to Nutrition Australia, kiwifruit is an ideal snack for children as it is packed full of nutrients like Vitamin C, potassium and fibre, yet is low in kilojoules.
