AUSSIE flags, face painting and snags on the barbecue were the sights at Pioneers Park in Berwick on Australia Day.
A record number of people gathered for Tuesday’s event which was hosted by the Rotary Club of Berwick.
Rotary Club of Berwick president John Rosenthal said this year’s celebration could have possibly been the council’s biggest turnout for Australia Day.
Families got into the Australian spirit by enjoying a range of activities including face painting, a Ford car club display, a flag raising ceremony, food stalls, children’s rides, a jumping castle, whip cracking, sack races, egg and spoon races and Cobb and Co horse and carriage rides.
The Berwick District Woodworkers Club and Motov8, a new program for schools and sporting clubs which aims to motivate young people to stay on track, set up stalls on the day.
Children also got the opportunity to explore a St John Ambulance and test the hoses with firefighters.
The event ran from 10am to 3pm.
Casey councillors Daniel Mulino and Simon Curtis said it was nice to see the Casey residents out and about on Australia Day.
“It’s a great event in the beautiful Pioneers Park,” Cr Curtis said.
Event co-ordinator Andrew Ireland from the Rotary Club of Berwick said it took about three months to plan and prepare for the day.
Mike and Rebecca, and their two children, Ebony and Elijah, from Berwick have been turning up to the celebration for the past three years.
“We come every year. It’s a good family day with a super atmosphere.”
