Cougars crumble

By Bridget Brady
THE Berwick City Cougars were convincingly defeated at the hands of second-placed Fitzroy on the weekend.
Coach Wayne Porter said lots of errors contributed to the 23-3 loss on Saturday.
“It was a bad day basically,” he said.
Fitzroy racked up 11 runs in one innings during the match, Porter said.
The Cougars were up against the top two teams in the space of one week, as they were due to face first-placed Werribee last night.
With finals out of sight, Porter said he would continue to give younger players a run in the side for the remainder of the season, with some as young as 15. “This whole season was about finding our feet.”
Porter said a number of the younger players showed promise for years to come.
The Cougars are currently 13th on the ladder.
The Springvale/Berwick women’s division one team defeated sixth-placed Port Melbourne 7-5 on the weekend, and face second-placed Springvale this weekend.
The club is gearing up for some fun and entertainment with the annual ladies’ day event this Saturday at Berwick. There will be prizes to be won, performances from an Australia Idol contestant and fashions on the diamond. Players will sport pink hats and undershirts, Porter said.
