A CIGARETTE butt thrown out of a car window may have been the cause of a scrub fire along the Monash Freeway on Monday afternoon.
Cars were diverted from the Narre Warren-Cranbourne exit after fire crews were called to the scrub fire just after 4pm.
Third lieutenant Damien Baker from the NarreWarren fire brigade said crews were able to control the fire within minutes of arrival but took 45 minutes to ensure it was completely blacked out.
He said three tankers, from Narre Warren, Narre Warren North and Hallam controlled the blaze, which did considerable damage to the sound wall and partially damaged a residential fence behind the wall. Traffic slowed as drivers were diverted.
Lieutenant Baker said that on first glance the fire seemed suspicious, but after investigation was found to have been caused from a smoking material such as a cigarette.
