Parking at last for Berwick station

BERWICK Railway Station’s long-awaited car park upgrade was officially opened on Sunday night.
The car park, which provides 300 extra car parking spaces and a new secure bike cage, boosts the number of spaces at the station to 800.
The additional parking lots were originally expected to be ready before Christmas, but remained shut because electricity for lights and CCTV cameras had not been connected.
Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula said the Brumby Labor Government was taking action to deliver the best transport network in Australia.
“The upgrade to car parking at this station recognises the needs of these growing suburbs in Melbourne’s South-East, and will help to relieve parking pressure at the station.”
Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato said the car park extension delivered on a pledge made by the Brumby Labor Government in the 2008/09 State Budget.
The fully surfaced parking spaces feature CCTV and lighting.
“The decision to upgrade and extend these car parks is in recognition of the booming patronage on Melbourne’s rail network. Power was connected to the car park site on the weekend allowing it to be open in time for Monday morning peak hour.
“That is why we’re creating more car parks, as well as ensuring they are safe with appropriate CCTV and lighting, which is great news especially for those who live far from their station.”
Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said it was marvellous that the car park was finally opened.
“We’ve been fighting for it for many years,” he said.
Cyclists at Berwick Station interested in becoming a bike cage member can visit the Parkiteer website at www.parkiteer.com.au.
Berwick Station can also be reached by bus routes 828, 834, 835, 836, 837, 838 and 839.
