Chess champs crowned

The best young South East chess talents battled it out against each other recently, as part of the inaugural Chess Republic Master Spring Chess Championship on Saturday 7 October.

Tournament director Chamal Mudalige said the event was a significant step forward for the organisation as it ventured into the world of competitive chess.

“The competition brought together aspiring chess enthusiasts from various skill levels, offering them a chance to test their strategies and skills on the board,” he said.

“Medals and certificates were awarded to the standout performers, recognizing their exceptional talent and commitment to the game.

“This competition served as a springboard for Chess Republic’s mission to promote chess as a sport and an intellectual pursuit.”

Champions crowned on the day included Nagralawala Jiaan (under 6 boys), Gowda Likhil (under 8 boys), Amarasuriya Danul (under 10 boys), Siriwardana Avinda (under 13 boys), Sahna (under 6 girls), Guptha Yashika (under 8 girls), Dombagahawatta Metheni (under 10 girls) and Nedumaran Abbinayaa (under 13 girls).

Chess Republic Academy is open Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday.
