Riding of the Bounds is a highlight on the Casey calendar, with Casey mayor Lorraine Wreford saying that each year the “much-loved tradition” attracts about 200 riders and horse-drawn vehicles.
“The event has been held in Casey’s Sister City, Berwick-Upon-Tweed in the United Kingdom, for more than 550 years and, since 1988, we have held a re-enactment of this fantastic event right here in the City of Casey,” Cr Wreford said.
The horse-riding course is about 15km and takes about two-and-a-half hours to complete, starting and finishing at Akoonah Park in Berwick.
During the ride on Sunday 18 April, participants will inspect the boundaries of the City of Casey and Shire of Cardinia.
A barbecue lunch is included and there will be awards ceremonies for champion rider, mayor’s choice, best presented group, best horse-drawn vehicle, most Australian rider and the best western turn-out.
River Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith is gearing up to take part in the event for the first time, with fellow councillors Amanda Stapledon and Geoff Ablett.
“I’m looking forward to it. I’ve got a good horse that’s confident, responsive and not mad,” Cr Smith said.
“We’ve all had a couple of riding lessons so we’re ready to go.”
Registrations for the ride start at 8am, entry fees are $15 for individuals, $30 for families of no more than four riders and $65 for groups with a minimum of 10 riders.
All riders must wear an Australian-approved equestrian safety helmet.
