A fine day greeted the Pakenham Over 60’s on Sunday; which was great timing after 40-milimetres of rain caused the cancellation of nearly all cricket on Saturday.

Pakenham took on Iona, the first Over 60’s game for Pakenham since 19 October.

Included in the Pakenham line up were two Iona players (Alex Miller and Jeff Phillips) and three players playing their first games for Pakenham in Warren Dummett, Gerard Healey and Greg Johnstone.

Pakenham captain Peter Ross won the toss and bowled.

Tony Wyatt and Mark McLauchlin opened the batting, with Wyatt 16 (30) retiring before Iona lost its first wicket with the score on 34 in the 11th over.

McLauchlin 15 (28) was bowled by Greg Johnstone.

In the next over Warren Dummett caught Rod Pallot 2 (12) off the bowling of Michael Barlow.

Peter Felsted lasted eight balls in scoring a single before he was caught by Dummett of the bowling of Ron Milnes.

Mick Scully 23 (25) became Dummett’s third victim when he was stumped off the bowling of Peter Ross.

Iona was 4/69 off 20 overs, with Ron Lovel 23 and Bob Rogers 22 both retired after facing 30 balls.

Pakenham claimed its fifth wicket in the 28th over with the score on 102 when Mick O’Neil 1 (10) was caught by Gerard Healey off the bowling of Peter Ross.

Ernie Dessent 4(10) was stumped by Alan Reitman off the bowling of Michael Barrow.

The versatility of Warren Dummett was seen when he had Peter Heywood 16 (25) caught by Alan Reitman off his bowling.

Jon Martindale 2 (5) was then brilliantly run out by a side-on throw by Peter Ross.

After 40 overs Iona was 8/150 with the two not out batsmen, Russell Ferguson 13 (25) and retiree Tony Wyatt adding four runs off three balls to his total.

Pakenham’s Bowling: Michael Barrow 6-2/19, Peter Ross 7-2/17, Warren Dummett 1-1/5, Greg Johnstone 8-1/24, Ron Milnes 5-1/27, Jim Gregory 7-0/24 and Les Jones 6-0/31.

Pakenham was off to a slow start because of the excellent bowling of the Iona attack.

Both Pakenham openers were back in the pavilion by the ninth over and the total was only 12.

Michael Barrow 6 (30) was caught and bowled by Mick Scully and Warren Dummett 3 (16) was caught by Mark McLachlin off the bowling of Peter Heywood.

The score was 2/54 after 20 overs and Pakenham needed 97 off the last 20 overs.

Gerard Healey 22, Greg Johnstone 13 and Alex Miller 16 had all retired after facing 30 balls.

Peter Ross 20 (19) was another of Ernie Dessent’s stumpings, this time off the bowling of Mick O’Neil.

When Alan Reitman 17 (24) was bowled by Ron Lovel the score was 5 for 112 in the 34th over, Pakenham needed 39 runs off 33 balls.

Les Jones and John Moore took the total to 125 in the 37th over before Jones 6 (18) was stumped by Dessent off O’Neil’s bowling.

Two runs later Moore 12 (15) was bowled by Ron Lovel.

On the second last ball of the 40th over, Jim Gregory 5 (9) was bowled by Tony Wyatt.

Greg Johnstone and Ron Milnes 3 (7) were not out.

Pakenham ended 8/136 – 14 runs short of Iona’s total.

Iona’s bowling: Mick O’Neil 8-2/17, Ron Lovel 8-2/29, Peter Heywood 7-1/18, Mick Scully 3-1/8, Tony Wyatt 5-1/16, Peter Felsted 4-1/20, Rod Pallot 4-0/22.
