Crowd pays respects

A HUGE crowd paid tribute to our Anzacs in Berwick on Sunday.
Returned servicemen, their families and others marched from the Berwick RSL to the High Street cenotaph before the service.
Guest speaker, City of Casey citizen of the year Judy Owen, said the spirit of the Anzacs lived on.
“We only have to look at what Australians did for each other on Black Saturday, the Boxing Day Tsunami, or the Bali bombings…it seems Australians are always willing to roll up their sleeves and get things done,” she said.
“When a mate is in need, we go to help out, just like our forebears did.”
Mrs Owen said that standing there in front of the crowd had given her goosebumps.
“Today we stand safe and free … all these things we owe to those men that fought, endured, suffered and died for our country. Let us never forget their sacrifices.”
Berwick RSL secretary George Nicholson read the names of RSL members who had passed away in the past 12 months.
The service again finished with the salute, fired by members of The Australian Great War Association.
