Banking on locals

By Bridget Cook
The bank needs $700,000 in pledges from community members and businesses to establish the branch.
The Hallam Community Bank campaign has been running for two years, with current pledges totalling $405,000.
Once the pledges reach the target, a feasibility report will be conducted, then those who have pledged have the chance to confirm if they still want to buy shares in the bank.
The bank committee, which is made up of community representatives from Hallam and business people with interests in Spring Square, Hallam, have secured more than 300 pledges. Pledges provide capital to set up the branch.
Committee president and local pharmacist Danny Gan said they have worked hard with committee members out every Saturday in Spring Square seeking pledges, as well as visiting local sporting and community organisations.
“I know we have had good community support, but we could definitely do with more,” Mr Gan said.
“As well, we would welcome volunteers to the committee to spread the work and improve our penetration to community groups and Hallam.”
Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan donated a sign, to be installed in Spring Square, calling for more pledges.
“When the committee succeeds in getting the $700,000 it requires, it will be the first time there has ever been any bank branch set up in Hallam,” he said.
Pledge forms are available at Hallam Pharmacy, Spring Square, Hallam.
