A BERWICK school student is hoping to send a safety message out to children playing on residential streets.
As part of a classroom activity at St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School, Jasmine Payne wrote a letter to the News saying she believed children needed to be better educated about road safety and the dangers of playing on streets.
The 11-year-old said she had seen many near misses with children and cars in her neighbourhood.
“The kids, who are playing cricket or riding their bicycles, seem to get out of the way of the cars just in time,” she said.
“I believe that these children need to be more careful and be told about road safety by their parents or schools.”
Jasmine, a Grade 6 student at the Berwick school, says there needs to be more parent supervision when children are playing outdoors, in particular on the streets.
“I’m worried that one day these kids could get hurt or hit by a car.”
Grade 6 teacher Brad Carmody said as part of a school activity, the students had to write letters about a particular issue.
“Some wrote letters to our principal, the sports teacher, the local police and the council,” he said.
“I was impressed that Jasmine raised this issue because it was obviously a general concern she had in her neighbourhood.”
Jasmine is hoping to also raise the issue with Casey Council.
