POLICE have been patrolling the streets in Casey over thepast two months – even ontheir days off – to increase road safety and have a greater police presence.
Operation Rapido, funded by the TAC, ran from 1 May to 26 June and involved 15 police members working 152 hours in their own time.
Senior Constable Allen Inderwisch, from Casey Highway Patrol, said police detected 341 offences during the operation.
They caught 217 speeding drivers and found 45 people using mobile phones while driving, 25 people not wearing a seatbelt and 18 unregistered vehicles.
“We also discovered four people failing to display P-plates, seven drivers disobeying red traffic lights and three learner drivers failing to have an experienced driver with them,” he said.
He said police were disappointed with the “staggering” number of offences.
“Police working on their days off show the level of commitment we have to road safety in Casey,” Sen Const Inderwisch said.
“They are going above and beyond their rostered shifts.”
