NEW traffic lights at the intersection of Clyde and Centre roads in Berwick have been switched on.
The traffic signals are part of a $2.2 million project aimed at improving traffic flow.
Narre Warren South Labor MP Judith Graley said traffic delays at the intersection would be reduced.
She said the signals replaced nearby pedestrian traffic lights on Clyde Road.
“About 150 school children use the pedestrian lights each day to get to and from the many schools in this part of Berwick,” she said.
“The new intersection lights will provide a safe crossing point for both Clyde Road and for students crossing busy Centre Road.”
As part of the project, the existing traffic signals at Clyde Road and Bemersyde Drive intersection have also been adjusted to link in with the new signals.
Ms Graley said the community had been “vocal” in expressing its concerns about the delays and safety at this location.
Berwick resident Cindy Lowe said the upgrade made it a lot safer to drive in the area.
“It makes it easier to go shopping to Safeway or to Eden Rise,” she said.
“The upgrade to Centre and Clyde roads is absolutely fantastic.”
