Young guns’ chance for offshore glory

EMERGING local cricketers will have the chance to hone their skills on the dusty decks of Sri Lanka later this year.
The Young Cricketers Development Program of Victoria will take a squad of under-19 and under-17 players to the sub-continent in September, following the success of the first Sri Lankan trip last year.
The touring party will comprise players from the Cricket Victoria’s Dandenong and Southern districts, so any would-be international stars are being encouraged to register their interest as soon as possible.
The 14-day trip will include a series of matches against provincial and school teams in Sri Lanka, with a stopover in Malaysia for two Twenty20 games.
The idea is to expose young cricketers to international cricketing conditions as well as vastly different cultures.
The inaugural tour was a huge success and was followed by a visit from the St Peter’s College (Colombo) cricket team, which played against a Southern District XI in Cranbourne recently.
The tour dates are from 15 to 28 September.
To register, or for more information, call Peter Mathison on 0437 981 782 or Vernon Tissera on 0403 298 626.
