POLICE are warning bank customers to familiarise themselves with skimming devices to ensure they don’t fall victim to ATM scams.
ATMs in Narre Warren and Cranbourne have been targeted with the skimming devices this year, police say.
Detective Acting Sergeant Terry Ryan from the Fraud and Extortion Squad said overseas crime gangs, believed to be Eastern European, were preying on customers who were not familiar enough with ATMs to detect a skimming device.
He encouraged consumers to keep a close eye on every transaction and know what to look for when using an ATM.
“Members of the public need to take some ownership to protect their own savings,” he said.
“It is vital to know what to look for and also to alert police so they can effectively stop these scams occurring.”
Consumers are advised to try and use the same ATM or same type of ATM, cover hands when typing the PIN and regularly check bank balances. Police are urging anyone who has been a victim of ATM skimming to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au
