CONSTRUCTION is expected to begin soon on the Hallam Valley Trade Training and Skills Hub, which is expected to benefit seven local schools, says Holt MP Anthhony Byrne.
The Hallam Valley Trade Training and Skills Hub is a cross sectoral trade training centre that aims to provide high level training in traditional and emerging trades for senior school students at Hallam Senior Secondary College, Fountain Gate Secondary College, Gleneagles Secondary College, Endeavour Hills Secondary College, Hampton Park Secondary College, Narre Warren South P-12 College and St Johns Regional College.
Mr Byrne welcomed the investment in trade training centres, which is part of the Gillard Labor Government’s economic plan to give students more opportunities in education.
Federal Labor has committed $10.4 million to the Hallam Valley Trade Training and Skills Hub. Participants in the program will have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of vocational skills training while at the same time continue their studies for entry to university or higher education at their local secondary colleges.
These centres are being supported by local industry such as Apprenticeships Group Australia (AGA) in Hallam.
Mr Byrne recently met with apprentices at this facility. Mark Knox, general manager at AGA, said to give young people a chance at gaining long-term employment, they needed the skills that employers were looking for.
“That’s why it’s so important that we push ahead with Federal Labor’s Trades Training Centres as a vehicle that allows the achievement of that outcome,” he said.
Principal at Hallam Senior Secondary College Anne Martin said the trade training skills hub would provide training in areas of identified opportunity in the region.
“From the perspective of the schools involved, it is an exciting prospect that students will be linking up with long term and secure employment from local businesses and manufacturers,” Ms Martin said.
