CASEY sports facilities are offering people incentives to get off the couch and get active.
Casey RACE, Casey ARC and Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre have launched the “Fight the Couch” campaign as a battle against heart disease and other lifestyle issues.
The campaign, which will run to 4 October, will offer $150 worth of programs and services to all new health club or aquatic members who sign up during the campaign.
Existing members will also receive $50 towards programs and services at the centre for every member they refer.
Casey YMCA area manager Michelle Young said that recent research had shown that too much time in front of the TV increased the risk of dying from stroke or heart attack by 11 per cent in men and 18 per cent in women.
“Our members tell us that the comforts of the couch are sometimes just too hard to resist at the end of the day, and it can quickly become a habit to sit too much, and then eat mindlessly while watching TV,” Ms Young said.
“We’re serious about our mission to help make our community healthier and happier and are making this offer in good faith that it will provide the extra support new members need to stick with a healthier lifestyle.”
