Sweet historian- Gleneagles

A GLENEAGLES Secondary College teacher was recently recognised for her engaging and innovative approach to teaching.
Ariella Sweet was one of seven Victorian history teachers to win a place on the Spirit of Anzac Teacher Study Tour.
The Spirit of Anzac Prize, funded by the State Government and managed by the Shrine of Remembrance, is an opportunity for teachers to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning about Australia’s military history.
The prize consists of a 16-day overseas field study tour during the September school holidays, where winners could visit places including Gallipoli, the Western Front, and workshops at the Imperial War Museum in London.
Part of the application process involved creating an innovative project that would inspire and encourage students to connect and better understand Australia’s military history. Ms Sweet said her project involved bringing the voices of history to life through podcasting in the classroom and utilising current technology including iPods, MP3 players and the ultranet.
“I believe that history is a vital part of Australian culture,” she said.
“I intend to incorporate my experiences on the Spirit of Anzac trip to help influence and shape the way history is taught in the future.”
