Skate skills

By Kelly Yates
TALENTED skateboarders and BMX riders showcased their skills at the opening of the Buchanan Skate Park in Berwick.
The new skate park was opened last Wednesday by Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley, who was representing the Sports Minister James Merlino, and Casey mayor Lorraine Wreford.
The new Buchanan Park Skate Park, located along Clyde Road, offers a “street course” designed for beginner and intermediate skateboarders and BMX riders.
The facility features a banked hip, quarter pipe, manual pad, ledge, rails, kicker and stairs for the 5500 skaters in Casey.
“The multi-use skate park provides a challenge for all skill levels from beginners, intermediate to advanced skaters and riders. It’s also the perfect place to host competitions,” Ms Graley said.
The total project cost was $200,000, with the City of Casey providing $140,000 towards the project and the State Government, through Sport and Recreation Victoria, contributing $60,000.
Cr Wreford said the facility would give Casey’s young people the opportunity to test their skills on state-of-the-art equipment.
‘The Shed’ in Cranbourne East is currently undergoing a redevelopment that is set to deliver a world-class facility, set to attract skaters from all over Melbourne.
City of Casey sport and leisure manager Richard Amon said works had progressed “well” for the comprehensive major upgrade of ‘The Shed’.
‘The Shed’ is due to open in November.
