PARENTS wanting to protect their kids in the home now have access to free cord safety kits.
The cord safety kit is a small device that attaches to the cords on your curtains or blinds and stops your child from getting strangled in them.
Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said safety around the home was an important issue – something he knows all to well with two young sons.
The Victorian Government introduced new laws in 2008 that meant all new blinds and curtains had to reach higher safety standards. New products are now required to have safety devices already installed. However, older blinds and curtains may not be as safe.
Sadly, two deaths occurred in Victoria last year from children getting entangled in blind cords, and many more injuries have also been reported.
Mr Donnellan said that it was important that homes were as safe as possible for children to grow up in.
“The cord safety kits have been really popular already with many parents calling up this week for one,” he said.
“It’s great to see.”
