Emery debuts at Bathurst

By Justin Robertson
A LOT of kids grow up wanting to race cars at Bathurst. But not many get the chance to ever do it.
In his Bathurst 1000 debut, Berwick’s Geoff Emery mixed it with the elite on the biggest stage for V-8 motor sports and loved every second.
“It was such a fantastic experience to race around with those guys,” he said. “They are very good at what they do and they’re champion drivers, so it’s a massive buzz to drive around with guys who have so much experience.”
Emery finished in 24th position from a field of 31 drivers in the 1000 metre race, but said that on the day it was fiercely competitive, as he expected.
“Normally there are about 10 cars that don’t finish. The only reason we ended up in 24th is because so many cars finished which says a lot about the reliability of cars these days,” he said.
“We made a few small errors on the day but we weren’t totally out of our league out there.”
Emery now has his sights set on Sandown in a month’s time and the final round at Sydney’s Homebush track and is quietly confident his team can improve on their current ninth position in the championship standings.
“We have two pretty big rounds coming up. if we have a good few races we could slide into fifth or sixth,” he said. “If we keep up our recent good form I think we’ll do all right in the next few rounds.”
