AGE is no barrier when it comes to this dynamic dance duo, who are both in their 40s. Casey locals Paul Zaidman and Cheryl Smith took out 1st place at the Victorian Salsa Championships on the weekend.
There was a record number of entrants into the competition, which is the largest one in Australia.
Cheryl, one of the directors of DANCE101, said that they were not deterred by their age and trained everyday to take out the top award.
“We’d wake up every morning and dance, flat out for a few hours; it’s a fabulous way to start the day,” Cheryl said.
Cheryl returned to dancing after 20 years in a corporate job.
“Every time I got a pay rise, my butt grew bigger!” Cheryl said. “I was sick, depressed and over stressed. I knew I was on the wrong track.”
Then, she took matters into her own hands, leaving her job, her boyfriend and losing over 25 kilos.
“Dance is my saviour, it keeps me fit, happy and healthy. I now have a “wake to no alarm clock” regime,” Cheryl said.
“Now, I am so happy and healthy, I can spread my happiness to so many other people.”
Paul and Cheryl own DANCE101 a virtual dance studio, and were finalists in the 2010 Telstra Business Women’s Awards. They have over 6000 students and over 30 locations around Melbourne.
