Down on bikes

CASEY Council impounded four unregistered motorbikes during a two-day crackdown on illegal riding.
The operation, in partnership with Victoria Police, targeted motorbike riders in areas not designated for riding.
In total, 56 offences were recorded including unlicensed riders, unregistered bikes and no helmets.
Casey mayor Lorraine Wreford said she was pleased with the results, as the operation ensured Casey was a safe place for everyone.
“It is extremely dangerous for people to ride motorbikes in open public spaces. Motorbike riders need to be aware of the law and ride responsibly or face the consequences,” Cr Wreford said.
A release fee of $512 applies for owners of bikes after they have been impounded.
Under a Casey community law, it is an offence to ride a motorbike in an undesignated area and people face a fine of up to $2000.
Residents are encouraged to call the council’s 24-hour, seven day a week toll free hoon hotline on 1800 18 4666 to report dangerous and irresponsible drivers.
