The City of Casey, in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, is providing a Detox Your Home free service on Saturday 4 December to collect products such as old cleaners, left over paint, dead batteries and weed killer from residents in Casey.
The collected materials will be treated and recycled, or disposed of safely by a specialist team.
City of Casey mayor Cr Lorraine Wreford said many household products contain chemicals that can be dangerous to children and pets and cannot be disposed of through the council kerbside waste collection service.
“So it’s fantastic that with the help of Sustainability Victoria we can assist residents to dispose of these items through the free Detox Your Home day,” she said.
Sustainability Victoria’s chief executive officer Anita Roper said the free service would help householders minimise the danger of accidents and reduce the risk to the environment.
“There is no doubt that leaving unwanted household chemicals around the home, garage and garden shed increases the risk of accidents. That is why we encourage people to take these materials to the collection sites,” she said.
“If products like paint and solvents end up in landfill or in our waterways, they can cause significant environmental problems.”
Residents can deposit their unwanted household chemicals on from 8am until 4pm on 4 December at the City of Casey Works and Operations Centre, Vesper Drive, Narre Warren.
Materials not accepted include chemicals used by businesses for commercial and industrial purposes, motor oil containers over 20 litres or 20 kilograms, or empty chemical containers, farm chemicals and waste asbestos, ammunition and flares.
Materials accepted for collection include old batteries, barbecue gas cylinders, insecticides and pesticides, kitchen and bathroom cleaners and fire extinguishers.
