THREE district secondary schools have received grants to better connect with Asian culture and languages.
The Federal Government announced $2.68 million in funding for the Becoming Asia Literate: Grants to Schools outreach program and member for La Trobe, Laura Smyth congratulated Nossal High School, St Francis Xavier College and Berwick Grammar School, St Margaret’s.
“Increased knowledge and understanding of Asian languages and cultures will be a huge advantage for Berwick and Beaconsfield students in our increasingly globalised economy,” Ms Smyth said.
Nossal High School assistant principal Toni Meath said they were very excited about the grant which will fund the school’s project titled ‘Nossal High School as an international student voice’.
“We want our students to have a voice on the world stage,” Ms Meath said.
The grant will fund a new language lab and send two students to Korea to present an academic paper at the 19th World Council Conference for Gifted and Talented Students in August next year.
The schools were three of 191 schools across the state selected for the $62.4 million National Asian Languages and Studies in Schools Program and will receive grants of $20,000 to $25,000 each.
The grants aim to promote the teaching and learning of Asian languages and studies of Asia in their schools.
“This funding will allow these schools to explore contemporary ways of learning about Asian cultures and languages,” Ms Smyth said.
