Welcome the Year of the Snake

Springvale’s annual Lunar New Year Festival was a dual celebration of Year of the Snake and Australia Day on Sunday 26 January.

An estimated 90,000-plus crowd basked in the sunny entertainment, including cultural dances, singing, foods and of course the spectacular lion dances, rounded off with night fireworks.

Now in its 33rd year, the massive attraction is run by Springvale Asian Business Association (SABA), with some funding from Greater Dandenong Council and the State Government.

SABA secretary-general Vincent Golf said the turnout was close to the record 108,000-strong crowd in 2018 – which also coincided with Australia Day.

“The festival was a great success. The crowds grew particularly in the evening for the main stage entertainment and fireworks.”

Multicultural Affairs Minister Ingrid Stitt, along with Greater Dandenong mayor Jim Memeti, councillors and MPs were among the VIPs.
