Dogwalker takes to gardener

A 68-YEAR-OLD Berwick man was assaulted with a garden stake in his front yard last Sunday week.
Police said the victim, who doesn’t speak any English and had only been in the country six months, was approached by a young man outside his Melzak Way house about 3.45pm.
Senior Constable Marie Kranidis said the victim was lucky to escape injury following the unprovoked attack.
“A male walking a dog, possibly a Labrador, took off his windcheater, placed it on the ground and then pulled out a large wooden stake from the front nature strip,” Sen Const Kranidis said.
“He approached the elderly victim in the front yard and proceeded to hit the victim eight times.
“The victim defended himself with a shovel and as a result was not injured.
“As the assault was occurring, approximately eight cars drove past and slowed down and watched the assault.”
The attacker is described as being in his late teens with blonde hair, slim build and about 180cm.
He had a piercing in the left side of his lip or nose and was wearing blue jeans and a pink t-shirt.
Police said he left the charcoal-coloured windcheater at the scene.
